Ask and ye shall receive

Yesterday: some work on the lecture material, a walking tour of our Jerusalem neighborhood, a staff meeting, and a late-night viewing of “Promises,” a documentary about the conflict both interesting and very relevant to our program. Today: all-day staff session on coexistence, with facilitators from the Adam Institute, and discussions about curricular and logistical details. Tomorrow: first round of lecture preparation. A final word on Israeli drivers: yesterday, [MEET co-organizer] Assaf stopped for a red light and was rear-ended into crosswise traffic by the bus behind him. He’s fine, uninjured, but I think I’ve made my point. And look: everything they say about forgetting the terrorist attacks once you actually get to Jerusalem, walk down the street, and sit in a cafe… is true. Anyone could be blown up. But more anyones could be run over. See above. The city is great, and it’s safe to boot. One more thing: if the American political discussion about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has given you a picture anything like the one I had before about yesterday, that picture is very quaint, but looking more and more to me like a mis-focused oversimplification.
